1.Safety
Brakes, lights, tyres, bearings etc degrade over time. If any of them fail, it’s dangerous not only for you but for other road users
Even items like breakaway cables (on braked trailers) must work properly or else in the event of a hitch failure the trailer could become uncontrollable. A breakaway cable is a legal requirement.

2.Legal compliance / insurance protection
Trailers need to be roadworthy. If your trailer isn’t maintained and causes or contributes to a crash, you could face legal penalties, or your insurance might refuse a claim.
Lights, tyres and brakes, must meet statutory requirements. Failing to maintain them can lead to fines or licence penalties.

3.Longevity and resale / residual value
Regular servicing prevents small issues from escalating into large, expensive ones. This helps the trailer last longer.
A well-maintained trailer will fetch a better price if you ever sell it.

Failures on the road cost more than maintenance in a workshop. For example, wheel bearings seizing, worn brakes, or rotten floors can mean emergency repairs or even replacement.

Especially for horse trailers / horseboxes, the condition of floor, walls, partitions, ramps, ventilation, lights etc impact the safety and wellbeing of the animals. A failure of a ramp, or rot in walls, can be dangerous.

Knowing your trailer has been checked over gives confidence that it’s safe, legal and reliable whenever you need to use it. Less worry about “will this trip be okay” or “did I check everything”.
